General Storage Tips

  • Don't overfill boxes or crates. Large boxes with too many items could be too heavy to lift without causing damage or injury.
  • Use suitable cartons and packing materials designed for carriage / storage.
  • Always try to store heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes on top.

House contents storage tips

  • Label each box / crate clearly
  • Where possible, group boxes and furniture in room order so things are easier to find and re-locate.
  • Try to group all small items that can easily be discarded by mistake when unpacking in one box.
  • When packing smaller, lighter objects, try to fill boxes completely, stuffing any gaps with loose-fill packaging or newspaper to prevent the boxes from collapsing when stacked
  • Wrap fragile items such as crockery in bubble-wrap or tissue paper to brevent breakages.
  • Try to pack books horizontally at the bottom of a box mixed with lighter items. This will stop the box being too heavy to lift.
  • Pack plates in an upright position and wrapped individually.
  • Store clothes in cardboard wardrobe boxes to prevent creasing.
  • Save space by storing small items like pots & pans inside appliances like ovens and fridges.
  • If garden furniture has been outside, store it upside down to drain any residual water.
  • Pack mirrors with thick cardboard / plywood and tape in a criss-cross fashion to increase strength.
  • Where possible, mattresses should be covered and stored horizontally on a flat surface to prevent damage.

Business / Industrial storage tips

  • Avoid filling complex machinery with loose-fill packing.
  • To archive business files, clearly label all boxes position boxes in aisles so files are easily identified.

Storing Computers & Electronic Equipment

  • When possible, store devices in their original boxes and packing.
  • Protect monitors, screens, scanner glass and other fragile parts with cardboard or pieces of bubble wrap or foam and tape. Mark glass parts as fragile to avoid leaning heavy objects against them or stacking heavy boxes on top.
  • Where possible use boards or pallets to raise equipment off the floor.

Storing Appliances

  • Where possible remove water from any hoses and internal components of appliances to prevent freezing and mildew.
  • Always keep fridges and freezers upright during transportation and storage to prevent damage. Ensure the interior is clean and dry and the holding tank and defrost pan are empty.
  • Always transport appliances with the doors taped shut with a strong tape. Remove the tape and leave the appliance door slightly ajar when in storage to allow air to circulate.
  • Where possible, cover appliances with blankets during transportation to prevent scratches & dents.

Packing Photographs and Photo Albums

  • Where possible, store photos and albums in airtight plastic bags in case of exposure to moisture.
  • Place a piece of paper between individual photographs to prevent them from sticking together.
  • When packing photograph albums with thick spines, stack them with the spine at alternating ends.
